“Where are we going? Why are we going in a cab? Why have you brought the cage?”

Eugene was trying not to smile too much. “Wait and see.” Aishah’s mother had been really nice about her daughter coming out with them – and delighted to know why. Had promised to help. Maybe she wasn’t so bad after all, once you got past all that floral.

Aishah’s face dropped. “I don’t want another cat.” A look of horror spread across her face. “Especially not a white one.”

The cab stopped at the clinic. Eugene’s stepfather wheeled her in. The place was full of cats, all meowing at different intervals like a band gone mad. In the far corner a cage held a young cat. Pure white, even whiter than the plaster cast on its left front leg. It was meowing sadly, monotonously, on and on.

“Snow Time!” said Aishah in a whisper, bending down out of her own cage. “Oh, Snow Time! Don’t worry. You won’t be in a cage for long.”
